Perhaps this is a societal evolutionary strategy, if you think beyond the evolution of the individual, to put pressure on certain individuals, who lack a strong drive to protect their own lives, to protect the "group".

Do you think this is why we tend to put the troops on a pedestal?

I'm sure the troops have the basic human urge for self-preservation (although being mostly young males, they cannot imagine their own mortality) but perhaps the societal accolades and admiration trump their survival instincts?
