Smear campaigns are evil and should be outlawed. What ROve learned a long time ago was that when you smear an opponent, especially for his strength, you put him in a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't position. It's like asking someone "do you still beat your wife"? Even if he denies it, he looks guilty. So smear campaigns should be outlawed since they often work too well. And they are always 100% lies. or at least 95%.

Rove has three main rules about smears. Whatever the opponent's most impressive strength is, lie about that in the ugliest possible way. Two, use surrogates and unofficial slush funds and claim they have no connection to you. Three, leave no papertrail and vanish after the smear has been made.

Rove got GW Bush into the governor's job by spreading lies that Anne Richards was a "lesbian". No truth to that whatsoever. Meanwhile he made GW Bush out to be a boy scout who never said anything, went to church and was just the handsome dashing son of the president. Meanwhile Enron types were funding everything and they proceeded to rip off Texan citizens as soon as they got into power, regulating the energy business and doubling electricity rates.

Rove got McCain out of the race in 2000 by smearing him as a "coward, traitor and aider of the enemy who fathered a black child out of wedlock with a hooker". That worked.

You can see the pattern. The Kerry smear campaign was the biggest and most dishonest ever. Not a single thing they put out there was even 10% true. But using the phony "vets group" and getting people like Bob Dole to lie for them, they got the media to give the smear campaign equal time and it put doubt into the minds of the nation at a time of war. In fact, Kerry would have us out of Iraq by now. So that's what it was all about, Bush's trillion dollar ripoffs and his goddamned stinking war. That is the price we paid for not 100% rejecting the Rove smear campaign.
