I think Abbey is responsible for a lot of irresponsible behavior. My sister named her cat Heyduke. I think that's a character in "Monkey Wrench," although I haven't read it.

I experienced some Monkey Wrench emotions myself when I hiked over some of my old stomping grounds and ran into a logging operation right on the trail that I spent a summer walking almost every day as a teenager. My intellect took care of it, though.

Some of our problems stem from decisions that are way over a century old. One and a half centuries, actually. At that time the country's biggest need was for transcontinental railroads. Land was granted to the railroads to encourage that, and the pattern that resulted is unmanageable in some places.
