He was a war hero. (A real one, unlike the one who ran for president in 2004.) The media loves him. Perhaps it's collective guilt. I don't think McCain would even be on the radar if he wasn't a Vietnam war hero. If he had to run on his political record, he'd be battling Duncan Hunter for 6th place.
