With more than a hundred fellow reporters, I watched him deliver his remarks on a monitor in the Railroad Lounge, where they served free sandwiches, chips and beer.

Carter was building rhetorical momentum near the end of the acceptance of his party's nomination for a second term.

"We're the party of a great leader of compassion - Lyndon Baines Johnson," the president intoned. "And the party of a great man who should have been president, who would have been one of the greatest presidents in history - Hubert Horatio Hornblower ... Humphrey."

Howls of laughter drowned out all other sound in the lounge. The guy next to me laughed so hard he spilled half his beer on my shoes.

The name was correct in the printed advance text of his speech. So unless somebody doctored the script on the teleprompter, we can only assume that the president blew his line.

Carter, of course, went on to lose the fall election to Republican Ronald Reagan.

His gaffe is one of the "10 most embarrassing moments for presidents and presidential candidates over the last 35 years."

Or so says the 2007 edition of the World Almanac and Book of Facts.
