You hit the nail on the head!

That's why for the life of me I can't see how any thinking person could vote for a politician that wants to expand the role of government.

In general, conservatives are way less likely to expand the role of government as a percentage of GDP than liberals. One of the exceptions has been Bush. The democrats don't like him because he's not one of them (and because of the war), but on spending he was even worse than the typical liberal. The new drug program for example is another fiasco in the making. That's the real reason he's so unpopular. It's not because liberals and democrats hate him. They would hate just about any republican. It's that real fiscal conservative hate him too because he's not one of us.
