Displaybank predicts that panel manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and LG.Philips LCD will achieve a record high in both revenues and operating profits from the sales of large-size TVs in 2008. Demand for large size TFT-LCD panels was up 18% year-on-year to roughly 450 million units in 2008, which can be converted into square meters that may grow by 27% year-on-year.

Due to tight supply, prices for large-size TFT-LCD panels have moved up for more than six months since the second quarter of 2007. On a quarterly basis, demand is predicted to fluctuate depending on seasonal factors in 2008, but from the second quarter, strong demand will probably result in a further tightened supply for the second half.

New investments in LCD panels have intensified in the large-size market, and thus, the supply of IT panels is projected to be as tight as it was in 2007. As a result, panel prices for IT use will be maintained in 2008, while TV panel prices are predicted to drop by about 15%, said Kim Kwang Ju, vice president at Displaybank.

In contrast, LCD panel manufacturers' efforts to cut costs have resulted in a reduction of approximately 20% in costs, raising the possibility for a considerable increase in profit ratio of manufacturers compared to 2007. >>
