While SMTG's Hb solution may be useable as a volume expander I would assume that it would be a very expensive one indeed. With Hextend's expected cost at about 100/ltr how does this stack up with SMTG's product? The point is simple. While a block of platinum may make a very useful and perfectly functional boat anchor, a slab of cheap cast iron is the metal of choice.

Your expertise in the field is certainly to be respected but I would think that in cases where only a blood expander is needed, the blood gas functions of SMTG would be an expensive, unecessary add-on. However, where oxygenation is needed then SMTG is the obvious winner as hextend does not purport to be a true blood substitute.
