Tom Ridge is one of the DC insiders who supports McCain. He recently pulled this same sort of nominee manipulation at the state level. He used his influence with the PA Repub party to make Lynn Swann(retired football player) the nominee for Gov, against Dem Ed Rendell. Grassroots Repubs wanted Bill Scranton, but Ridge (as a former Gov) was the puppetmaster of the state party bosses. The latter infuriated the campaign worker bees by bigfooting the Swann nomination. Swann was soundly trounced.
