You also have to define govt. and private. Since most innovation in this country comes about due to govt. spending, whether military, NASA, scientific research or whatever, much of what you think is private enterprise is really socialism in action. For example, the first major computer was Eniac, whose invention was funded by a military grant. You can still go see it at my old school, University of Pennsylvania. The internet was a govt. funded invention. The first product to use a semiconductor was a Minuteman Missile. So, we have cutting edge technology only because we have govt. spending.
