Adam's AP-py as a sand boy! By Bob Warters
Adam Scott - 'the round of my life' Just a few days after Titleist unveiled its new series of irons, its No.1 staff player Adam Scott produced a sizzling final round 11-under par 61 with a set of the latest Titleist AP2 irons to capture the Commercialbank Qatar Masters on Sunday. It was the 27-year-old Australian's second victory in two visits to the desert event, as well as his 13th career win as a pro.
The new World No.5 became the first player to win with the new irons, a week after Martin Kaymer's victory at the Abu Dhabi Championship playing the new Titleist ZM Forged clubs. The AP2s and ZM Forged irons are two of four new Titleist irons that will be available in golf shops in the UK from March 15.
His 20-under par 268 total, including this course record in Doha - was his best round as a pro - and matched the tournament record previously set in 1999.
Using the Titleist Pro V1 ball he prefers, Scott started the final round three shots off the lead and posted five birdies in the first five holes. He added another before the turn and five more on the back nine to complete his course record. He also used a Titleist 905 driver, 906F4 fairway metal, Titleist-by-Vokey Design pitching wedge, Titleist Spin Milled sand and lob wedges and a Titleist-by-Scotty Cameron GSS putter. AP2 irons, say the makers, are a technical forging with dual cavity design for extra forgiveness and feel. “That's the best round of my life,” said Scott, who received a cheque for $285,000, the famous Mother of Pearl trophy worth a further $100,000 as well as a BMW650i car for breaking the course record.
“I've shot 62 before as a pro but this is my first 61 and to do it under the pressure of a final round makes it my best ever. I played pretty awesome from the start. The five birdies from the first hole got me right back in the tournament and after that I just kept going.” |
