Which one? The meanings are different enough to be different words, in this case its the same word for very different concepts.

You mean "progressive", or "liberal-Democrat" thinking? Than no they don't explain it very well, perhaps not even at all. A few are entirely irrelevant (for example no one in the US pushes monarchies), others are general platitudes that people of any political persuasion could have, others are circular (defining liberal as liberal), after taking those away about the only definition of liberal you only have two ideas left. One of them is a good definition for libertarian (and modern American liberals are NOT libertarian), the other is "progressive", which is just a different label for the same thing, not an explanation of it.
