Greetings Fman.
There is alot of info on the WSP thread about pipes dykes kimberlites and diamonds but I know it is alot to read through.
The last ice age scrapped across the north and when it melted aprox ten thousand years ago it left behind glacial till. The boulders are found in the till and probably came from a near by source. WSP believes it has two types of kimberlite boulders, see map on WSP home page, boulders from dykes and boulders from pipes. The trick is to find those pipes.
Lava flows come from volcanoes magma which comes to surface and runs over the ground, its not kimberlite. The volcanoes which create kimberlite pipes dont have lava flows. After a gaseoes erruption the kimberlite fills the pipe and its surrounding dyke system if there is one. You can have dykes with pipes or dykes on their own. Not all pipes or dykes have diamonds but since the boulders found contain diamonds the odds are pretty good that there is a diamond bearing pipe out there somewhere.
Hope that helps some. Try visiting the web site home pages of various diamond exploration companies and you'll learn alot about this. Just click on the carlson profiles at top of the threads and you will find the companies web site.
