Q, here is my tally using final Jan 31 prices:

Overall I am happy with the results which handily beat the russell index:

The portfolio is up 0.04% in 2008 (or 1.59% vs. purchase).
The R2K is down 6.88% in 2008

While the average stock is down, the largest gainers ensured a flat performance.
For example IMH nearly tripled since the yearend. Stocks which gave me lots of headache, like CC or IMB did what was expected and show impressive gains.

The small caps, unrelated to mortgages did worst. Without IMB the first portfolio lost money. Without IMH the microcap portfolio lost 6.32%, similar to russell 2K.

It is incredible how bad all semiconductor/hardware an other tech stuff did in January. Take PALM, SGTL which swung from gains to large losses. One can say, the fed saved the portfolio by forcing financials up.

Overall, I am inclided to cut positions particularly as the smallcap markets do not come back to life. There are some signs but buying is light to nonexistent.

Same time, next year...
