well they often aren't very tolerant of conservatives, and some of them aren't very tolerant of free expression in general

I wouldn't call giving away other people's money generous."

As for the south shifting to the Republicans, that might have a lot to do with other issues. When people like McGovern started to gain prominence in the Democratic party, it turned off a lot of people in the South (and also certain groups outside the south, many of whom later came to be called "Reagan Democrats"
