The funny thing about Nixon was that McGovern was no real threat to him. The much decorated combat hero of WWII was painted as a coward by the GOP and the smear stuck. This was already reflected in the polls when Don Nixon ordered the family to break into Democratic Party HQ. The other funny thing is that he kept the tapes. I'm no criminal mastermind, but that was stupid with a capital S.
