Why not an Intel-based XO?

> Intel Quits Effort to Get Computers to Children

Really, why did Intel quit OLPC?

An obvious strategy for Intel inside OLPC seems:

- Intel XO successor for primary-grade students.
- Intel Classmate for secondary-grade students.
- Intel school servers.

I never got the impression that Intel hardware was an impasse for OLPC; the vision seems to be focussed on the software and learning methodology, ie. the Linux-derived OS, Sugar interface and applications based on constructionism as a philosophy for learning. The Intel Classmate has none of that.

So why did Intel choose not to develop an XO successor with Intel hardware and software contributions? A cheaper and/or more efficient XO implementation would have replaced the AMD hardware; if that was Intel's main concern.

Were they not capable? Was it hostility towards XO within the Intel Classmate team? Was it concerns about marketing, profits or what?

Any views on that here?
