Do you know that story to be true? I have some doubts about it. Commercial aircraft typically take off with full fuel tanks and are too heavy to land immediately. If necessary to land soon after takeoff, the typical procedure would be to circle and dump fuel. I also find it hard to believe the pilot(s) failed to look at a "weight and balance" workup for their flight. Once airborne, the most logical thing for that crew to do would be to go on to their original destination, burning off fuel all the way. Questions, questions....(from a former licensed pilot).
