I had a recent knee problem that required and MRI and just got the bill. I thought it might be interesting to the thread.

MRI
Amount billed - $2440
Discount - 2105.55
Cost of care - 334.55
Amount you owe - 0.00

Medical visit
Amount billed - $672
Discount - 564.01
Cost of care - 107.99
Amount you owe - 30.00

So let's see, a retail customer, someone without insurance and the same problem, would have paid $3112. The insurance company buying wholesale paid $442.54, of which I paid $30.

What's wrong with this picture?

The uninsured person, who presumably has the least money, pays about 7 times the "real" cost. Even if they give them a 20% discount it's still 5 times the "real" cost.

The bottom line is the uninsured person is subsidizing the insurance companies and the insured person. Exactly the reverse of the system we should have.
