That's pretty much what I said, I tend to stay away from the larger cities.
The family needs to visit Roma, Firenze, Venezia et al but we spend the most time in the country.
As I mentioned, even Sienna is busy.
But I do think you can do both in a couple of weeks. Last summer we were two weeks or so in Italia, a week in Eire.
2 days in Roma, for the kids, but my wife & I went to the seacoast one day & Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli Gardens the other.
Couple of days in Venezia for the kids, but my wife & I went out to the islands.
a few days outside of Firenze, but spent most of the time in Tuscany.
A trip to Milano, but stayed in Como & spent most of the time there.
Unless you have never been to Roma (for example) & wish to see all that it offers, there is no need to spend a lot of time there. The outlying districts of all of these cities are attractive.
You just have to have an unencumbered schedule & be willing to adjust plans as you go. Travelling by committee must be difficult. With us, if the kids wish to see the Uffizi, fine. Call me when you are finished & we'll meet for dinner.
One thing about the cities, you don't need Italian to get by. If the only place I wanted to to go were the large cities I wouldn't bother trying to grasp the language. |
