You certainly are placing hope before reason and experience. The democrats and their union base have been behind the unwinding of CAFE compliance over the last 15 years or so. The democrats are against coal, forcing us to buy more fuel from OPEC, The democrats are against nuclear power, forcing more purchases from OPEC. We are not going to run out of oil any time soon. There is no replacement for oil on the horizon. Our efforts to reduce dependence by using available alternatives are being stopped by democrats and global warm fear mongers. 2/3 of the world oil sits in the Persian Gulf region. Perhaps you forgot how we arrived in Iraq. Blaming the US for ME instability is rather foolish.
