Part of what's wrong with your picture is that we don't know what an uninsured person pays. All we know is the billing price submitted to the insurance company, which could be just for show.

Could be but it isn't. Unless you think the providers have multiple billing schedules depending on how folks fill out their check in forms. Not at all likely.

It's a simple retail/wholesale calculation. The retail customer may or may not get a discount, depending on the kindness of the provider, and if they are smart enough to ask for one. But it doesn't compare to the wholesale discount the insurer gets...

Whatever poor uninsured soul had the same problem paid 5X what the insurance company paid. Is that fair... is that capitalism?
