We don't have that now. And it surely is not what people want. Do you really want to pick your dr depending on what he charges? If you go into a hospital do you want them to run it as a free market?

I wasnt intending on getting into an argument about the right description of our current system. "Free market based" might be a better term, but whatever it is, we are clearly moving towards more government involvement.

There are two things that I know with certainty about a universal health care plan.

1) We will never move back to anything remotely similar to our current system, even if the implementations of universal health care are worse than today. Note that I'm not predicting that they will be, just continuing the point that it is impossible to get rid of governmental programs, regardless of effectiveness.

2) There will be many unintended consequences to having heavy government involvement in such a huge portion of our GDP. As I said earlier on the thread, I can imagine greater small business formation as insurance is no longer a worry. OTOH, I can also imagine some heavy handed behavioral engineering as almost everything can be viewed as an expense. The move towards banning transfats doesnt have much momentum right now, but it will play very differently when the debate can be framed as a move towards cutting spending.

Of course, all of this comes from our respective viewpoints. The Patriot Act scares the crap out of John, while the heavy handed dogooders scare the crap out of me <g>.
