If people believe that this gives us a strategic advantage over Iran, is it also true that we have a strategic weakness because of our lack of sufficient refining capacity?

Maybe in some theoretical sense, but our refinery situation is a lot better than theirs, and importantly our supply line is more secure than Iran's, in part because our navy is so much more powerful. If any major naval power of the future seriously challenged our domination of the high seas than both our crude oil and our refined products supply lines would be in danger.
