Intel will buy renewable energy certificates from solar power generators and wind farms equal to the electricity needed to power 130,000 average U.S. homes a year. Intel moved to the top of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's list of green power purchasers by volume. The Santa Clara-based company is buying renewable energy equal to 46 percent of its total electricity use. Intel's purchase of certificates representing more than 1.3 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy a year is the largest in the country, company spokesman Bill Calder said Monday. The computer-chip maker has a multi-year agreement with Sterling Planet, a supplier of certificates for green power from biomass, hydro-electric, solar and wind energy projects.
