The south is the most conservative part of the country, the bible belt and the most bigoted part of the country. They had to be forced to integrate...

So did the north. During the summer of 1966, I watched my neighbors in Chicago throw stones at Martin Luther King Jr. during an open housing march. When it came to racial prejudice, one of the big differences during that period between the south and the north was that the south was more honest and open and about it.
