I didn't see it but, from your description, it seems inappropriate although not necessarily offensive. In a social setting the old manners are respectful and agreeable. In a business setting, not so much. In a business setting, the junior person holds the door for the senior person, for example, regardless of gender. You don't help a woman with her chair because she's a woman. You help a person who needs help regardless of gender. As to what Obama had in mind, dunno.
