I think we should gradually withdraw our bases from around the world, unless our costs for keeping them are fully covered by the countries that benefit. Sort of a modified Ron Paul plan. If we want influence, we should be doing it with development aid and commercial relations, like China is doing in Africa.

America is blessed in that we are one of the few advanced countries that is practically self sufficient, and we produce food in huge surpluses that we can trade for the few things that we really need from abroad. If we put our minds to it, we can become self sufficient in energy in a decade or two, with a combination of conservation, nuclear, coal, and renewables, eliminating our key dependence from abroad, as well as the key reason of our trade deficits, and excess military spending.
