Since it was brought up by GZ, Senator McCain's health makes his running mate more important than usual (if he's the nominee).

You're right in that a good combination that does not concentrate offices or regions makes any ticket more electable. Add to those a representation of minorities, it's turbocharged. It still may not be enough this time around. I am not optimistic for Republican chances this year.

Last century, the presidents' parties were split as evenly as possible: 40 and 40 years by 1980; then, 12 and 8 years from then to 2000. I think this century will see the same 50/50 split by the time it's done. Of course, by then, I'll be a spry 149 years old. <g>
