Here are the facts which I gather from industry sources - periodicals/trade jourlnals.
1) NT new licenses are growing faster than Unix.
2) Oracle #1 database company says the market is saturated thus it lowered its growth est. from 30% to 20-25% - possible negative implications for SUNW>
3) New competitors selling new PII workstations - Dell, CPQ, Gateway and HP. + Merced chip will result in the most powerfull NT/UNIX server in 1999.
4) If you read quarterly releases from the networking companies like
CSCO ASND BAY FORE OSII you'll notice that they have been impacted by the Telecom deregulation, which has resulted in longer sales cycle - thus greater uncertainty/less spending.
5) UNIX is not dead, but it is feeling very ill due to the severe price pressures(from the facts above)especially in 1998.
