Our forces were ill equipped to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.. Nonsense. They where about as well equipped as any military has ever been. What will ships do. Well they are important, if not for Iraq or Afghanistan. OTOH I don't know that we need any big buildup in numbers. New shipbuilding probably will be and probably should be to replace old ships. Not that larger numbers would be useless but "not useless" doesn't mean "worth the money".
