A year ago I set up a portfolio of 5 stocks using the magic formula strategy. I started with a listing of 100 stocks with market cap > 100 million and narrowed the list down to 12 by choosing only S&P Buy or Strong Buy stocks. I then further narrowed the choice down to 5 stocks by using a combination of price/target along with a couple of longer term technical indicators and purchased the following stocks:

BLDR
CECO
FCX
PACR
WDC

12 months have now gone by and here are the results:

My 5 selections were down 2.86% since purchase. (BLDR -56.24%, CECO -22.73%, FCX +66.34%, PACR -46.11%, WDC +44.44%)

The original 12 candidates were down 16.51% since 2/2/07.

The S&P 500 for comparison purposes was down 3.65% since 2/2/07.

I had hoped the combination of magic formula stocks based on trailing data and S&P recommended stocks based on outlook would achieve better results but the results were rather uninspiring.
