Rule #1 -- don't hold US dollars at all if you can help it. Rule #2 -- 30% gold (or gold shares) or higher. Rule #2 -- if you must hold cash hold yen or Canadian dollars. Rule #3 focus on stocks that are shielded as much as possible from the US market -- that might sound hard but most "American" companies are now more global than most people realize, which is why we will not see anything like DOW 5000 in your lifetime. Rule #4 -- recognize where your investments benefit from the organic growth of places outside the US in energy and agriculture as well as infrastructure areas that are being built out to serve exploding urban populations. Rule #5 -- do not mindlessly assume that the fate of the world is dictated by what happens in the USA.
