We have had quite the week around here. This is one of those kids stories that is a precious memory not due to the cuteness of the actions, but because of the outcome in the situation. They say everyone has a "first" car accident.
On Saturday night Michael, my almost 18 year old,' was going to his girlfriends house. He talked to her on the phone and she told him that her basketball coach was having people over for wings and pizza. She told Michael she did not know when she would be home, for him not to go over to her house. He was already on his way, so he turned down a country side road, and was going to circle back into town. As he came over the crest of a hill, he saw four deer in the road. The road he was driving on did not look icy, such is the delusion of "black ice." He hit the brakes and soon figured out he was on ice. The SUV started to slide and he lost control. The vehicle rolled, Michael crawled out of the window, but he did not have a scratch on him. He got did not have a seatbelt on, you can be sure we later had a discussion about that problem. He ended up in the back seat, sitting on the side window that was on the ground. The rear deck window, and the passenger door windows were totally blown out of it, and the windshield shattered on the side where the car bounced down the road. Again, Michael was unharmed it appeared. The next day he was a bit sore, where his shoulder hit something. The Bronco is totalled. When Mike and I got to the accident site, I stood on the road, with Michael hugging him, crying and praying out loud, thanking God that Michael was safe. When the tow truck got there and pulled it back onto four wheels, under where the passenger window was, there on the ground laid a newspaper. The newspaper was an advertisement for this summers Christian music festival, "Creation 08." Going to the creation festivals over the past few years has probably been where Michael's faith is most strongly reinforced. Looking at the circumstance, to me, it could only have been a God thing that Michael walked away. I have seen way too many news reports around here where a driver loses control on an ice covered country road, and they don't walk away. As I looked at the newspaper on the ground, face up, the words "Creation 08" boldly staring me in the face it was as if God himself had put his signature on the scene. It made it real easy to see the blessing of Michael's safety. God's hand is not always so clearly visible in our lives, but scripture promises us that he will never leave us or forsake us, when we put our trust in him.
