Verizon purchases Corning's ClearCurve fiber

Star-Gazette

Verizon Communications has become the first major telecom company to buy Corning Inc.'s new ClearCurve optical fiber and cable.

The Twin Tiers' largest employer said Thursday that Verizon will use the new Corning product in its fiber to the premises project, known as FiOS.

The fiber, which can be bent around corners without losing signal, was tested by Verizon in a series of field trials.

"This is the year that Verizon moves into high gear in deploying FiOS TV and FiOS internet to apartment buildings, condos and similar multiple dwelling units," said Claire Beth Nogay, chief network officer for Verizon Telecom "Corning's bendable optical fiber cable is particularly valuable in the tight spaces typical of these sorts of buildings."

The size of Verizon's order was not disclosed.
