You appear to be under the wrong impression that only US drug companies do R&D.

I doubt he is under such an impression, and I know I'm not. The point is not that companies in other countries don't develop drugs, the point is that a very disproportionate part of the incentive for doing so is the fact that they can make high profits in the US, instead of facing price controls and/or monopsony buyers or at least heavy political pressure to reduce prices like they do in much of the rest of the world.
