Too optimistic imo.

First, Barack Obama is not a phony. He may be glossing over what he actually is, a community activist turned the most liberal Senator in America (I didn't realize til this moment that it was even possible to get to the left of Bernie Sanders), but he is not denying it or claiming to be something else. He is carefully wafting upwards on gauzy generalities, none of which are phony because they are nearly content-free. And boy, do they sound good!

He is charismatic, uplifting, young and vigorous. He makes people feel good.

John McCain is old and crusty. He makes some people feel good, but not the youngsters who are flocking to Obama.

If McCain runs against Obama, the Dems will try to respect McCain to death, suggesting every day that someone who suffered so much so long, long ago, has earned every minute of an honorable retirement. Any moment of McCain confusion or tiredness will be played over and over to prove that he's too old. Bill Clinton handled Bob Dole this way, and it worked very well for him.
