My argument for racism being worse in states like Indiana or Montana (or at least in pockets there) is just that I remember visiting relatives in Montana and hearing about huge meetings of some white organization to discuss how to deal with the Indian problem. You could never do that in the south. Of course in Montana the populace is 97% white.

Where I grew up in the south(Eastern NC, fairly backwoods), you still had pseudo segregation and there is do doubt that at night you had to be careful where you hung out, black or white. In Eastern NC, most everyone loves their guns, either for huntin', protectin', scarin', robbin', etc.

California is a different world vs the US ex the West coast.
