My daughter never went through that, fortunately. She dated a very bright and level headed kid her last two years of HS and they behaved well. My son, OTOH, was the challenge. He had to take a summer class in order to graduate HS. I told him I'd pay for one year of college then he could tell me to buzz off, OR get to the recruiting office. When I came home the next night he greeted me with a smile and announced "I joined the Navy today!"

Turned out, he went on to a 20 year career, mostly as a crew member in an S-3 sub chaser. Got around the world several times and all the while completed his degree. Now he's has a high paying job and has turned into a first class citizen. We're very close these days, even more so than with the daughter (who, incidentally, teaches 5th grade in Ohio). There is hope, but it can sure take a long time to work out.
