It's the religious right which is lying about the Founding Fathers and Lincoln being religious. They were definitely not. At the very most they were deists, that is they believed in the general concept of a higher being (the ultimate mystery in other words) or "God" ("In God we trust") but not necessarily a Christian God, and certainly not a Jewish God.

You have to remember that after the Oliver Cromwell religious persecution in England these Founders were very wary of abuses of power by organized religion, particularly when it seized state powers. So the religious right has to lie to make any argument here, and they seem to have no ethics about lying and misrepresenting at all, and neither did Mitt Romney.

That quote BTW is not from an "Athiest" site, I've never even seen such a site, it comes from a history of religion in America.
Rather is it the religious right who are busy trying to change quotes, like when Bakker tried to change the meaning of a"a rich man has as much chance getting into heaven as a camel through a needle's eye".
