Elroy, the American people were gung ho for King George II to get stuck into Saddam Hussein, Uday and Qusay, the Taleban and Osama. Congress and the POTUS were all gung ho to go, other than Obama who, with some Islamic empathy and name-rhyming with Osama and Hussein could understandably think some jaw-jaw was better than war-war.

Bush and co didn't cross the American people. On the contrary. When things didn't turn out to be so "Mission Accomplished" after all and WMDs were as scarce as hen's teeth, they lost confidence in him. But that doesn't mean he crossed them. Congress is still giving him the support he asks for [more or less].
