JF, I thought about it, and I know exactly how we can "raise taxes on everyone in order to lower spending."

What's the deficit project to be this year? $400 billion? $550 billion (not including the SS surplus which shouldn't be touched anyway)? That means tax revenues will be $2.55 trillion vs. a $3.1 trillion budget.

Now all we need to do is raise taxes on everyone by 21.6%. Whatever people are paying right now to the federal government (that includes Federal, SS, and Medicare), take that amount and increase it by 21.6%. Doesn't matter if you're rich or poor. If you paid any tax whatsoever, pay 21.6% more.

Voila! No more deficit, and people will now directly feel the effects of politicians who can't control their own spending. That will turn everyone into "fiscal conservatives."
