I'm going to say you experienced I think of as a "barnyard" nose. I usually experience it with Rhone wines. A little time in a carafe after opening does wonders for these wines.

Get used to the screw caps, they are expanding their reach each season. No need for a good cork on a wine that is going to be drunk within a year, as most are. MP
