They do charge more to Medicare, but they know that Medicare will only pay a certain amount and the patient is responsible for 20% of what Medicare pays. That which Medicare and patient don't pay is taken as a tax write off. There are other physicians that have Medicare membership that allows them to charge, I think 15%, more than the standard Medicare rate which the patient is obligated to pay. I think the term is that they take the patient "on assignment". I don't recall the 3rd type of membership. I don't think your doctor can legally take any extra money you may offer. You'll find that you won't be short changed on services, the more services they do or have done to you the more money they get from Medicare...
