I don't think you are understanding Chipguy's point. By the early 90s, most purchase decisions involved 486 class computers. The 286 was already nearly 10 years old. Can you imagine someone buying a Pentium II based system today? That would be the equivalent. Either you are remembering incorrectly, or your office made some rather odd purchase decisions.
