"When I first started looking at Medicare maybe five years before my time, that was the case. Now you are allowed to sign special contracts with doctors outside of Medicare but I don't know the particulars."

Why would you want to pay them extra? Better care? I think I'd like to see verification of those statements......lotsa rumors go around the mill. I am aware of some of the well off going into special contracts with private doctors who see them as often as they want... I kinda doubt hospitalization is included.

"Where you get short-changed is the amount of time they spend with you."

Ah, a pet peeve of mine......for most of my adult life I have, on many occasions, measured the exact amount of time the doc spends with me......not sitting in the exam room waiting for him. Not including the weight and bp measurements his nurse does before he arrives. On many many occasions, that time has been less than 1 minute.(60 seconds)....I'd say that the vast vast majority of time I have spent with a doc has been less than 10 minutes. Exception....the annual physical which costs more than an office visit. I have always treasured those that didn't seem to be rushing.
