It was not a lie. Saddam refused to let the inspectors back in and the decision was made to remove him from power. The decision was made but we hadn't invaded yet when at the 11th hour Saddam said he would let the inspectors in. We had decided to remove him from power. As I recall we offered to let him take some of his fortune and move from the country in an exiled status if he would stand down. Which he did not.

It was far from the only factor in making that decision as you insinuate but Saddam had many open doors to resolution had he not been so obstinant for so long. Him denying the inspections for so long and the cat and mouse game he played cooked his goose. But keep trying to defend his 'honorable' career if you wish, its entertaining.
