Our founding fathers banned church from government. They were very-very concerned about religion being mixed with government as it had in Europe for so many centuries, thereby creating tyrannical theocracies, inquisitions, persecution and a total lack of spiritual freedom. They were also concerned about monarchists, and the modern version of that is the Bush family. Especially their scoundrel son GW who actually stated he'd like to be a dictator. As Jefferson said, he didn't care if his neighbor worshipped 20 gods or no god at all. That is what religious freedom means in this country, not that Jerry Falwell types get to dominate by controlling voting blocks and siding with one political party. That is un-American.
