Realistic answer: Raise prices and let the market sort it out.

Basically correct but the issue is demand elasticity. A lot of
upgrades would be put off indefinitely even with rather minor
increases in system prices.

Ahh, the other side of the coin... Reducing the quality of output.

ROFL.

If AMD disappeared tomorrow taking X2s, Phenoms, and
Turions off the market the average quality of x86 processors
would go up. AMD sells its its slow hot inferior products primarily
on the basis of Kmart blue light special pricing to OEMs who
pass it off to largely ignorant but price sensitive consumers at
places like Walmart. If Intel has to keep shipping 65 nm C2Ds
in parallel with 45 nm for a bit longer in AMD's absence the
x86 gene pool is still much better off overall.
