I just can't figure out how the hell you can stop quick on a steep hill.

Easy. Just fall down! ;-)

I tried snowboarding WAYYYYYY back and it was lots of fun. The guy that started Burton was a freind of a freind, knew we we're all avid surfers and heard we were going on a ski-safari.
He wanted some input from some surfer/skiers, so gave us a couple prototypes to "test" <G>

I had a blast on it. The only thing I REALLY hated was when you got to flat areas. You couldn't "pole" your way back to a better spot.
Too much damn work for me.
I notice that snowboarders simply stay away from that type of terrain.

That definitely can screw you out of some good spots. One of my favorite spots is Heavenly and one of the real nice runs is about 7 miles long. In order to get the entire run, you have to pole across a couple of pretty long flat spots.
It's no big deal with ski's, but it'd be a hellava hike with a snowboard. (in DEEP snow it would REALLY suck.)
